Meet the Fishers: Port Chalmers Crew Show How It’s Done
The first community event supported by FirstMate was held at Careys Bay wharf on November 27 2021.
Organised by the Port Chalmers Fishermen’s Co-operative Society and proud local commercial inshore fishers who gave up time at sea to help with this important event, including FirstMate Navigator Glenn Robinson, over 150 members of the public came to the wharf to find out more about what it means to be a fisher. They were treated to filleting demonstrations, invited to explore the decks of local fishing vessels and able to peer into tanks filled with a variety of Otago sea life. Freshly-caught fish was provided and barbecued by event supporter Harbour Fish and Talleys kept the little ones happy by providing ice-cream.
“
People always have questions when they hear what I do … I hope that at the open day they get a better understanding of how it all works and leave better educated.”
- Glenn Robinson
Given the success of this event, FirstMate hopes to run similar ones in other locations, so that more people working in the sector have an opportunity to share their stories and more members of the public have the opportunity to learn about our industry.
